Little Snitch 4, the fourth version of the popular macOS firewall software, is available from July 5, 2017 (available as a beta version since June 2017) and can be purchased and downloaded at www.obdev.at/littlesnitch/ for US $45 per single license. I'm using LittleSnitch on OS X 10.11.6 to see outgoing connections and have previously noticed how ksfetch keeps trying to connect for Updates, launched with changing names by GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent so that it prompts a different request every time.
I recently updated my early 2009 iMac to OS X 10.11.3, and when I open the Mac App Store, there is a loading icon on the top left of the window, without showing anything. I cannot access the App Store like this. Anyone know how to fix it?
Due to popular demand, Little Snitch is now scriptable, it comes with a command line tool. Since this littlesnitch command is very powerful and can potentially be misused by malware, most of its functionality is only available when enabled in Little Snitch > Preferences > Security > Allow access via Terminal. We recommend that you enable access to the command line tool only as long as you need it. When access is enabled, you must take precautions that untrusted processes cannot gain root privileges.
There is little to add to this info. Most subcommands require that you run littlesnitch as root (sudo littlesnitch). If the command behaves differently for different users (e.g. setting a user specific preference), the value is changed for the user running sudo, not for root. If you want to change something on behalf of another user, use the --user option.
Note that you can disable the command line utility with sudo littlesnitch write-preference allowCommandLineAccess false. If you do that, you lock yourself out and you must go back to the preferences dialog to enable it.
Many people purchase Little snitch and Radio Silence for blocking Adobe CC apps like Photoshop from accessing the Internet. They assert that paying for a firewall program like Radio Silence (costs 9$) is much affordable than owning an Adobe license. We are against using a firewall for any illegal activities like blocking the activation services of Adobe, FL Studio, or any other paid app on a Mac. I had OS X 10.11 Public Beta installed and figured the problem was either caused by a corrupt OS X installation or interference. I also learned that the OS X kernel could only handle a limited number of concurrently connected Bluetooth devices without running into congestion and interference issues.
One result it that for using WiFi/Bluetooth and cellular devices, location is everything. My location means few WiFi hassles. The neighborhood population density is low and my brick building means little signal gets in or out. Alas, it also means lousy cellular service. Where I live, only Verizon has decent coverage inside buildings. In cities, both WiFi and cellular can be overloaded and both the FCC and cellular companies seem to think the answer is more spectrum not using it more intelligently. A lot of what is filling up cellular data channels, individual streaming video of ball games, should be broadcast in mass, perhaps by digital TV stations. And smartphones should be smart enough to subscribe to and store those broadcasts.
I worked briefly as a cellular engineer in the mid-1980s for McCaw Cellular, which was bought out by AT&T for billions. The original idea for cellular developed by Bell Labs was to shrink cell coverage when demand grew. I see little of that. In small-town America where I live, cellular means 200-300 foot towers covered with antennas that are expected to cover dozens of square miles. In big city Seattle where I used to live, it means hidden antennas on 3-4 story buildings that are expected to cover square miles. Neither work all that well because the larger distances mean coverage is blocked either by hills (my town) or buildings (big cities). Cellular should now be covering small enough areas that every bit of terrain and building use can be taken into account to give good coverage. Tall towers mean lots of radio shadows.

While it does include a native installer, loading the program proved tricky and required a restart in order for it to work. An extensive and complicated end-user agreement also needed to be accepted. While advanced users would not likely have a problem with this, the potentially complicated permissions needed to tailor the program would be too much for beginners. In terms of function, the program requires little interaction and runs in the background. After setting up defaults, it monitors the user's system for programs that attempt to send data out. This could not be evaluated since we didn't have any applications that tried to do this, although the program indicated it was up and running. While this sounds similar to a firewall, the program claims only to be a privacy application rather than a full security program.

I was having the same -9838 error message and tried unplugging several times but nothing would work. But then I decided to be a little more patient. I clicked between the itunes store and iphone tabs in itunes until I didn't get the error message and it just sat there attempting to connect. I left it there and finally my phone was able to connect. My iphone was alive for a few secs but then went into another restore mode. This time a progress bar is on my screen but it's going very slowly. Maybe I'll be good to go when it's done...
I expect such shananigans from AT&T, but I really expected better from Apple. Here's Apple launching their new, much anticipated product - one would think that they would have done just a little planning to accommodate the demand. They really blew it.
Ran into same problem as others here..... did a little digging on apple.com.... in the new manual for the new and old iphone... it specifies that you need to use the new version of itunes 7.7 in order to upgrade! .... im trying this as we speak
BUT... when I do have a phone EVERYONE should call ATT and DEMAND credit for their lack of service. TOUGH.. they got in bed with APPLE and they can just bill them for this stupid error. I hope their stock gets slammed today too.. I'm p oed big time right now at myself for biting into the poison apple . . . . . suffer you little children!
Seeing all these comments I'm really glad I downloaded the update and installed it manually yesterday afternoon. Total upgrade time for my phone was less than 10 minutes. Hang in there folks, the new software is worth a little pain trust me.
I'm running little snitch which tells me that when I click on iPhone under iTunes, it attempts to contact albert.apple.com, but, whilst iTunes happily proclaims "Accessing iTunes Store..." it's fibbing. No data is being transferred.
Just got mine working about 20 minutes ago. Installing apps now. Update worked well once it started. Been going since it first came out though I took a few hour break to give people who needed it immediately a chance to get going. Here's a hint for once you get through. You have to authorize your computer through itunes at the top bar on the screen under store where the file/edit/etc menu's are to install the apps. Might save you some time. I'm sure we could all use a bit of that :) Try not to be too hard on Apple. It's a good thing that there is overload, means there are a ton of users and that is great for the platform. If you don't want a little down time maybe you should wait for day 2 to try the next install. Hopefully they will get a better system in place sometime though to solve that in the future.
I had the same "network connection error" bull that everyone else seemed to have on Friday until i found a really simple solution (and yes i know its a little late now, but i can't believe that nobody else here had thought about it). All you had to do was disconnect your iPhone and have somebody call/text you and problem solved. Maybe this might come in handy if apple still doesn't learn their lesson with the next big update.
Well apples new update worked for me after i was literally on the phone with 3 tech support guys in a 4 way call one of them sir your going to have to unistall itunes and anything related to that even quick time and just do that and restsrt comp and then make a new user log into that and then install itunes that so i did took a half hour after that i conected my iphone and it took like literally about an hour to to restor it and it worked kinda so i was all happy then i started it up and after about a minute it said no service then it started like vibrating ( probly should have given it to my girlfreind for some fun) so i had to hold the home buttom and power and when it restarted all it showed was a little usb cord pionting at the itunes symbol and so i tried to connect and restore it it was almost done then it said unknow error(9) i mean common why cant apple just make something that works write for once!!!!! theres almost always a problems with there updates.... 2ff7e9595c
